In Poker it is important not to play too many hands. If you constantly bet and play most hands you are dealt then you are more likely to lose more. If you don't start with a good hand, such as pre-flop in Texas Hold'em it is worth thinking about folding and playing on the hands which you think have a good chance of winning. It may be that you fold on 5 or more consecutive hands but in the long run this will help you because you are only losing your blind bet if you have a bad hand!

Obviously once you learn which hands are worth giving up and which are worth betting on and you are more confident then there is no harm in sometimes putting a few bets in just to see if anyone else follows or folds. If anyone has a good hand and you think you could well lose then you should fold to save losing any more money!

You may find that you fold more hands than you actually play, there is nothing wrong with this and you are reducing you're risk by keeping your bets for the hands you think have a good chance to win!
