Poker rulesPoker is a card game that is based both on chance and on skill. Poker rules apply in order to determine which player is the winner of each hand that is dealt. When you factor in something such as betting. it takes much more than luck to help you be successful. The most basic part of the game of poker is the deck of 52 cards. These cards are ranked from low to high 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace (Ace can also be low, but more often is high) and there are four suits which include spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Suits are all equal and when playing poker, the most basic rule is that a hand contains 5 cards and the highest hand wins.

According to poker rules, the hands of Poker include the following starting from lowest to highest:

High Card - If the hand doesn't have a pair of matching cards or better then the highest card is used. High card is also used to break a tie when players have the same type of hand (ex. one pair).

Pair - If the hand has 2 cards of the same type (ex 2 Jacks) and the other 3 cards are unique.

Two Pairs - If the hand has 2 different pairs of cards and a 5 different card. If more than 1 player has two pairs then the highest pair wins, if the highest pair is the same, then the lowest pair wins.

Three of a kind - 3 matching cards of any type along with 2 cards that are not a pair.

Straight - A straight is 5 cards in order such as 6-7-8-9-10. An ace may be counted as either high (after a king) or low (before a 2). A straight may now wrap though (Q-K-A-2-3).

Flush - A flush is a hand where all of the cards are the same suit (example 2,4,7,Q,K of spades). If there is more than one player with a flush, the high card rule is followed.

Full House - This hand consists of a 3 of a kind and a pair in the same hand. Ties are broken by the 3 of a kind first and then the pair.

Four of a kind - This hand has 4 cards of the same type (example 4 Aces) and one different card. If there is more than one player with 4 of a kind then the highest 4 of a kind wins.

Straight Flush - This is the best hand possible, unless you are using wild cards. This is 5 cards in order and entirely the same suit. A straight flush which has an Ace high is called a Royal Flush.

Poker is a gambling game and it is important to understand betting. There are poker rules that apply to the betting process. In most games of poker you must 'ante', which is putting in some money just to get dealt cards. After the cards are dealt the players place their bets and add money to the 'pot', which is the collection of bets in the middle of the table. At the end of the hand the highest hand wins the pot.

Poker rules require that the betting is done in order and each player has the option to Call, Raise, or Fold. When a player calls they match what has been bet before them. If a player decides to raise, then he/she matches the bets before them and 'raises' the amount of the bet. Each player would have to match that players raise to stay in the game. Finally, if the player decides to fold they quit the current hand and any chance to win the current pot.

Poker is a fun and exciting game for all whether you are playing in the basement with your friends or playing professionally in a tournament. It doesn't matter if you are playing a friendly game for matchsticks or if the stakes are much higher - the same poker rules apply.
